PORT WENTWORTH, GA – Jan. 31, 2025 – The City of Port Wentworth will hold three public hearings in February to discuss the potential impact of Georgia State House Bill 581 (HB 581) and the City’s intent to opt out of the new law. HB 581 establishes a statewide homestead exemption, which could potentially affect property taxes for local homeowners.
Under the current Stephens Day Homestead Exemption, Port Wentworth property owners enjoy enhanced protection and lower taxes than those provided by HB 581. By opting out, Port Wentworth aims to safeguard homeowners from potential tax increases that could result from the new statewide exemption.
HB 581 was passed during the 2024 legislative session and signed into law by Governor Kemp on April 18, 2024. The law includes three key provisions: changes to property tax assessments and appeals, the introduction of a statewide homestead exemption that applies unless a local government opts out, and a provision for a new local option sales tax.
To opt out of HB 581, the City must follow a public notification process which includes advertising and holding three public hearings, passing a resolution to opt out, and submitting the resolution to the Secretary of State by March 1, 2025.
The public is invited to attend the following hearings, all of which will take place at City Hall, 7224 GA Hwy 21, Port Wentworth, GA 31407:
Residents are encouraged to attend these hearings to learn more about the potential impacts of HB 581 and to voice their opinions.
