Chatham Area Transit Services Officially Expand to Port Wentworth

PORT WENTWORTH, GA – March 11, 2024 – Today, the City of Port Wentworth hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the official start of the Chatham Area Transit (CAT) services in Port Wentworth. Port Wentworth Mayor Pro Tem Thomas Barbee, CAT Chairman Deidrick Cody, CAT CEO Faye DiMassimo, and Chatham County Commissioner Bobby Lockett as well as city representatives and other community members gathered to commemorate this historic development.

This expansion of CAT services includes two fixed-route buses, running every hour Monday- Saturday and every two hours on Sunday, as well as 20 new stops with four ADA accessible bus shelters with plans to install additional shelters.

“This is an exciting and significant day for everybody living or working in Port Wentworth,” said Mayor Pro Tem, Thomas Barbee. “I am fortunate to be a part of the team that forged this partnership with CAT to provide greater connectivity for all as our city continues to grow.”

Port Wentworth and the greater Savannah region are already experiencing exceptional growth, and this will continue with the building of the new Hyundai META Plant in Bryan County. Currently 25,000 vehicles are traveling daily along State Route 21 and State Route 30, in Port Wentworth so the new CAT services will enhance quality of life for everyone.

“As we proudly celebrate this milestone, CAT and Port Wentworth seek to form a strong community partnership.  CAT stands as a cornerstone of reliable, sustainable, and safe transportation. We eagerly anticipate the launch of this service with the goal of connecting people to the places they want and need to go,” said Executive Director/CEO Faye DiMassimo.

New business and leisure facilities such as the training facility for professional minor league hockey team, Ghost Pirates will benefit from public transport options. The city is planning for the future with transportation in place to handle new infrastructure and exciting initiatives such as the planned new amphitheater.
